I'm really excited about the opening of Tuen Ma line

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"I'm really excited about the opening of Tuen Ma line" (Chinese: 屯馬開通真的很興奮) was a phrase said by train enthusiast Jason Law (Chinese: 羅哲琛) in an interview during the opening of the full length of the MTR Tuen Ma line on 27 June 2021. When asked about his thoughts on the opening of the new line, Law said the phrase by singing in the tune of English folk song Greensleeves.

The phrase became an internet sensation within days of the clip being uploaded to YouTube, and was adapted into multiple forms in the format "I'm really excited" (Chinese: 真的很興奮). Law also made further appearances on media as a train enthusiast due to the popularity of the phrase, and was further invited to sing different variations of the phrase.

Background[edit]

Tuen Ma line was formed from the merger of the former Ma On Shan and West Rail MTR lines, and opened in two separate phrases. On 14 February 2020, the Ma On Shan line was extended from Tai Wai to Kai Tak and renamed Tuen Ma ine Phase 1.[1] The remaining section of the Tuen Ma line, from Kai Tak to Hung Hom, connected with the West Rail line and integrating the latter into the Tuen Ma line.[2]

Origins[edit]

In the early morning on 27 June 2021, the day of the opening of the section from Kai Tak to Hung Hom, hundreds of train enthusiasts, including 16-year-old Jason Law, waited at Sung Wong Toi station for its opening. While being interviewed by TVB News, Law said: "This is a song lyric I thought of, "I'm really excited about the opening of Tuen Ma line," something like this that can describe my feelings right now.''[3]

The part "I'm really excited about the opening of Tuen Ma line" was sang to the tune of Greensleeves, which was used as the background music for the listening test of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination. Law later explained that he had finished the listening examination in school earlier that day, and was "brainwashed" by the tune of Greensleeves when he said the phrase.[3]

Shortly after, the interview featuring Law was uploaded to YouTube, and reached 66 thousand views within one night.[4] A parody video in which Law was depicted singing the phrase repeatedly reached more than 85 thousand views within 24 hours, and was described as HK01 as "brainwashing and easy to sing".[4] Law also expressed appreciation towards the parody video and said "I like it very much".[5] Actor Chapman To was also reported to sing the phrase along with a few original lines.[5]

Later usage[edit]

The interview segment started a trend where people would imitate the phrase.[6] In a Facebook post, Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) remarked that "I am really excited to ride the KMB".[7] Don Don Donki staff were also seen in a viral video singing "I am really excited to come to [Don Don] Donki".[8]

Law was also invited to appear in a music video by MTR to mark the opening of the East Rail Line's cross-harbour extension to Exhibition Centre station. The video was titled "I am very excited about the East Rail Line crossing the sea", and was posted on the MTR Facebook and YouTube pages on 12 May 2022, three days prior to the extension.[9][10] Law later thanked netizens for their positive reception, and said that "it was [his] honour to bring everyone joy", and sang his segment together with MTR officials on the opening day.[11][12]

Impact on Law[edit]

In an interview with Young Post in July 2021, Law revealed that he had been a victim of doxxing and his phone number was posted online following the interview, and strangers have begun calling the number. In addition, some netizens were critical of his interest in trains due to the MTR's alleged involvement in shutting down train stations early during the 2019-2020 Hong Kong protests, and he was forced to deactivate his Facebook account due to worries over the negative sentiment.[13]
