Dieudonné Ella Oyono is a Gabonese-Canadian economist, public servant, lecturer, and politician. He serves as a team leader in the Economic Development Service of the City of Montreal and as a lecturer at the School of Management Sciences at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).[1] He was the president of the Parti Québécois (PQ) from November 2019 to 2021.
Biography[edit]
In Libreville, Gabon, Dieudonné Ella Oyono studied economics at the Université Omar Bongo. In 2001, at the age of 27, he pursued doctoral studies in Montreal, Quebec, supported by a scholarship from Gabon. He decided to settle in Montreal, began teaching economics at UQAM, and eventually joined the Quebec public service. In 2006, he became a market analyst at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Quebec. In 2008, he secured a position as an economic advisor at the Ministry of Economy of Quebec. Finally, in 2010, within this ministry, he was promoted to assistant regional director.[2]
Parallel to his career as a public servant, Dieudonné Ella Oyono began to engage in the union sector, within the Syndicat de professionnelles et professionnels du gouvernement du Québec. Additionally, he founded the organization Africa Canada Opportunities, an integration and business development organization between Quebec and Africa.[1] In 2018, he published a book titled Comment tomber en amour avec son nouveau pays. He became involved with the Parti Québécois starting in 2012. He was an unsuccessful PQ candidate in the Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne riding in the 2018 elections, and subsequently became president of the party's riding association in Pointe-aux-Trembles.[3] In November 2019, he won the PQ presidency uncontested.[4]
