Nilüfer Akbal (born 1969 in Varto, Turkey) is an Alevi Turkish-Kurdish singer from Turkey.

Life and Career[edit]

Akbal was born in 1969 in the small town of Varto in Muş province to a family of Kurdish origin. The family moved to Istanbul for economic reasons when she was a child.[1]

In 1987 she came to Istanbul and began her music training at the Arif Sağ Music School where she took bağlama and singing lessons in which she in 1988 released her first album Arzuhal Eyledim.[1] However, Nilüfer Akbal was not satisfied with her album and continued her education.[2]

In 1991 and 1992 respectively, Hasret Gültekin recorded the albums Newroz 1 (the first legally released Kurdish album in Turkey thanks to a sound trick by Hasret Gültekin) and Newroz 2.[1] These albums are works of Hasret Gültekin, and he asked Nilüfer Akbal to sing only three songs with Riza Akkoç in the album Newroz 2. At this time she went to Cologne and worked with the German music composer Paulo Grenau at the Rheinische Musikschule.[2] In 1995 she released her first Zaza and Kurmanji language album Mîro.[1] Their next albums were also mixed languages.[1] So she sang in Shewa also in Sorani and Syriac.[3] Nilüfer Akbal gave concerts abroad and wrote music for films and reports.[3]

Since January 2009 she has moderated several programs on the Turkish state broadcaster TRT Kurdî, which is in Kurdish.[4]
