German Press Council

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Press Council (Deutscher Presserat) is an organization of the major German publishers and journalists' associations. The organization serves as a voluntary self-control agency for the print media and their online media and monitors compliance with ethical rules in journalism. The rules are set out in the press codex. Based on complaints, violations of the rules are checked and reprimands are issued.[1][2]

The Deutsche Presserat member organizations are the Federal Association of Digital Publishers and Newspaper Publishers [de] (BDZV), Media Association of the Free Press (MVFP), German Journalists' Association (DJV) and the German Journalists' Union [de] (dju). The office has been based in Berlin since June 2009. It is hosted by the German Press Council e.V..

The Press Council was founded on November 20, 1956, modeled on the British “Press Council” (later: “Press Complaints Commission” and today Independent Press Standards Organisation) in order to prevent a planned federal press law.[3]
