Produced by frequent collaborators, Ari PenSmith, Mocha, Sammy Soso, and Believve, whom Tyla refer to as The Fantastic Four, "Jump" was written by Tyla Seethal, Ariowa Irosogie, Imani Lewis, Corey Marlon Lindsay-Kay, Samuel Awuku, Samuel Kitchens, and Emwah Warmington.[1] It was released as the ninth track on Tyla's self-titled debut studio album through Fax and Epic Records.[2] Before it's official release in May, the song had been used in multiple videos on the video sharing platform TikTok.[3]

Composition and lyrics[edit]

"Jump" is a dancehall song,[4][5] with elements of Jamaican riddim,[6] and trap music.[7] It is characterized by the amapiano log drum, airhorn sounds, and a "pulsating" bass.[8][5] The song was descibed by its producer, Sammy Soso, as "very Caribbean".[9] Part of the song's lyrics stipulates, "They ain't never heard a pretty girl from Joburg. See me now and that's what they prefer. I don't touch no wheel 'cause I got a chauffeur, first class how I get around the world."[10] On her decision to have American rapper Gunna featured on the track, Tyla stated:[6]

He’s a great rapper, he kills it. For ‘Jump,’ because it was a different vibe to what I'm used to, I really tapped into a different vibe. I just felt like a rapper would take it further into the world that I really wanted it to be in. So after thinking, Gunna literally was the perfect choice for me, not only because he's great but because he's shown interest multiple times [in] Afrobeats and the love for the culture, which made that choice very easy.

Critical reception[edit]

One critic at Pitchfork described Gunna's feature on the song as "a bit confusing", and proposed that it may have been the product of music industry engagements.[11]

Commercial performance[edit]

In the United States, "Jump" has sold over 100,000 units through streaming and music download,[12] and peaked at number 38 on the Rhythmic chart.[13] In the United Kingdom, it peaked atop the Afrobeats chart,[14] number 38 on the UK Singles Chart,[15] and number 16 on the UK R&B Chart.[16]

Music video[edit]

The music video premiered on 20 May 2024. It garnered over a million views within it's first day and 2 million views within 2 days.[17] Directed by Nabil, the video was filmed in Johannesburg, South Africa. It features multiple men fighting over her, at one point crashing through her window to brawl. In one scene, Gunna serenades Tyla in the club, while in another, Tyla stops traffic in order to start a party in the street. Skillibeng delivers his verse in Kingston, Jamaica.[18][19]
